The way that you use lighting in your work can completely change the photographs you take. Now that you understand how to control light as it enters your camera (the exposure triangle), you must also deepen your knowledge of how we can control light as it hits our subject, as well.
Task 1: Prepare your site for a new project: 1. Go to your Distortion page and add a new title of 'Exploring Portraits, Lighting and Digital Editing Techniques'
Task 1 a: Explain the difference between hard light and soft light. Explain what a diffuser and reflector are used for - include images showing how a reflector and diffuser is used.
Task 2: Green (grade 1-3) Underneath your new title, carry out research into the following types of lighting and write a sentence on your website, explaining the effect each one creates & when you might use it in your photography:
Spotlight
Side lighting
Back Lighting
Soft/diffused lighting
Natural lighting
Torch lighting
Creative/unusual lighting
For example: Window lighting - stand/place your subject near a window for natural lighting. This will produce soft highlights and some shadows. This will vary depending on the time of day and brightness of the room in contrast to outside light.
Amber /Red: As with the green task, but also find general 'tips for lighting' images online. Include these on your page to refer back to later on.
Task 3: Explore each of the different types of lighting by finding: Green (grade 1-3) - at least one example Amber (grade 4-5) - at least two examples Red (grades 6+) - three or more examples between 1 - 3 examples of each of the following lighting techniques and putting them on your site above/next to each of the matching sentences: - a portrait photograph which uses a spotlight on the face - a portrait photograph which is lit from the side - a portrait photograph which is back-lit - a portrait photo with soft/diffused lighting - a portrait photograph with natural window lighting - a portrait photo with torch lighting - a portrait photo with creative/unusual lighting
Task 4: Watch the video from from 1:27 onwards to learn more about subtle studio light set-ups which you can use when taking your own photographs. Extension - make notes about the Laws of Lighting and add this information with appropriate images to your site.
