Why do we need contact sheets? The purpose of a contact sheet is to show all of your photographs from a photo shoot - even the ones that didn't work very well - in order to show that you have been selective when taking your photos and then selective in choosing the photos that you work with later on. It also shows the variety of photos that you have taken, locations you have been to etc.
Do not edit photos for your contact sheet It is important not to include photos which have been edited or cropped on your contact sheet, you will have the opportunity to edit your photos later and it's important to show the photo in it's original state before you make your changes so that we can see the difference. Uploading contact sheet To upload you photos onto weebly, drag a gallery element under your photo plan on your webpage. Click it then find your photos (put them into a named folder - e.g. Cloud photos 1 - on your device to keep them organised in case something goes wrong on your website) and select them all. It will take a little while to upload them all. Put a title above your gallery of whatever the photo shoot is called in this instance Cloud Studies 1. Your gallery of images will look like the one below. Use a maximum of 5 columns otherwise the photos will be too small for the examiner to see properly. Or you may create a contact sheet using Powerpoint so you can annotate it - whatever suits you best, just remember for a Powerpoint you should only have 15 -20 photos on each page so that your images don't become too small. That way the examiner can see all of your hard work.
Creating contact sheets on PowerPoint: - Create a new PowerPoint (A4 in size). - 15 - 20 images per sheet, but you can have more than one sheet. - Title your contact sheets with the name of the shoot e.g. Shadow Portraits 1 Shadow Portraits 2 - You can either drag your images over & resize each one in PowerPoint, or you can take a screenshot of the screen where your photos are displayed to insert that, instead - using the method shown to you in class. - Remember that the icons should be 'extra large' when you screen shot otherwise the quality will be low. - Compress your images to avoid your file size becoming too large.
Examples of Powerpoint and a Black & White Contact Sheet - What is missing from two of the examples?
Evaluating your shoot Add a text box below your gallery of photos, use the sentences below or create your own. You can copy and paste them into your website. For this task I had to... I took my photographs in.... (where?) My first shoot went really well/ok/badly. I think this was because..... Something I found tricky was... During this shoot I learned that......... As a result, my next shoot (I) will...........
Annotating/Evaluating your contact sheet If you are printing your contact sheet you can draw and hand write on it as explained in the image below.
Enlarge and crop favourites After you have created a contact sheet including all of your photos, you should pick your 3 or 4 favourites to display separately below the gallery or contact sheet - these should be cropped to show the best part of the photo. This shows the examiner that you have begun to select your best work and that you can tell the difference between a successful photo and a not so successful one.
Generally speaking, you will be graded as follows: ALL - Your photos have been saved to you computer and drive in a folder clearly marked with the name of the shoot in case of problems with your powerpoint or website later.
