Now that you have had some time to consider your own ideas for this project and investigated the work of a photographer whose work looks at the theme of identity, you need to further develop your understanding of some of the techniques you could use when creating your own response. I have given you an artist to research, but it is also important that you have the opportunity to research an artist that you are interested in so that your mini final piece during the 'fine art photography' phase is both personal and meaningful.
Task 1: Take a look at your mood board from earlier in the project to help you decide on which artist you should research. Remember that your first response to the theme will need to be influenced by the work of both of the artists who you have researched so think about how you could combine the ideas of the artist you choose with the ideas behind Gabriel García Román's work. If you are unsure of who to pick, visit the 'photographers' section of this Weebly and look through the 'portrait' photographers section to find someone whose work you like. Remember that this is the fine art photography phase of the project, so try to choose photographers who fit within that category. Here are some suggestions:
Madame Yevonde
Elise Wehle
Hannah Hoch
Martin Parr
Barbara Kruger
Nacho Ormacheo
Brno del Zou
Saul Steinberg
Task 2: Green (grade 1/2) - a) Find at least 3 images by your chosen photographer b) Add your three photos underneath your title (using the image icon). Resize your photos so that they are of equal sizes beside each other. c) Copy and paste the sentence starters below underneath your three photos and then complete the sentences.
(name of artist) lives and worked in... (name of country).
They are best known for... (portrait/landscape/still life/photocollage - type of photography they are known for.)
I think the photographer has made the artwork by… (photoshop and write what tools might have been used, hand manipulation, collage etc.)
I believe the photographer wanted to explore… (possible ideas/reasons for making the art)
Three words I would use to describe the style of photography would be...
I like the photographers use of … (rule of thirds, leading lines, unusual angles, contrast, interesting lighting.)
Something else I like about the artwork is…
I will use the ideas/techniques (of…) in my own work by...
Remember that your writing must be in your own words - if you copy and paste from the internet then your work could be picked up for copyright infringement and your coursework could be discounted for the exam.
Amber (grade 3/4) Create a research page which includes a section of images by your chosen artist. Use the sheet below to help you with what writing you should aim to include:
Red (grades 5+) Create a research page which includes a section of images by your chosen artist. Use the writing sheet and examples below to help you when adding writing to your page:
Task 3: Upload your Google Slide to your site if you need to.
Lesson 2
As part of your research, you should take a look at the work of the artists you have chosen to be influenced by and create your own visual responses to their work. This process allows you to better understand the techniques they use and how their work is made which is knowledge that you can take forward with you into the rest of your project.
Task 1: Take a look at these responses below alongside the research pages which go with them to get an idea of how your responses could relate to the artists you've studied:
Task 2: a) Add a title to your site of '(artist's name) Photoshoot Plan' b) Underneath you can either copy & paste the sentence starters below into a text box or download the template, fill it in and upload it to your site.
Green (grade 1/2) Copy and paste and finish these sentences: • I will do the photoshoot…… (where and when) because………….. • The props I will need for this shoot are………. • The techniques I will use are……………. because………….. • The lighting will come from………… which will give me a mood of……….. • The dangers of this shoot may be……………. • My plans link to the photographer I have researched because......... Amber / Red Ensure that you have included the information in the green task, but also add extra information about: - Camera settings - Compositional guidelines You get extra marks for including sketches of how you would like your photographs to look (it doesn't matter how good they are), so consider drawing sketches of how your photos might be, photographing them and inserting them as 'images' on your site, as well. Take a look at the handouts and examples of plans to help you.
Task 2: Upload your Google Slide to your site if you need to.
Lesson 3
As part of your research, you should take a look at the work of the artists you have researched and create your own visual responses to their work. This process allows you to better understand the techniques they use and how their work is made which is knowledge that you can take forward with you into the rest of your project.
Green (grade 1/2) - Complete one shoot where you take 12 photographs recreating the style of your chosen artist.
Amber (grade 3/4) -Complete two shootswhere you take 15-20 photographs.
Red (grades 5+) - Take as many photographs as you wish. Variety is key - try to vary the angles from which you take your photographs, how close you are to your subject, which parts of the scene you are zooming in on etc. Remember to play with compositional guidelines in your images.
Lesson 4
Task 1: a) Add a title underneath your artist research of '(artists name) response contact sheet' b) Upload your photographs from last lesson underneath your title
Task 2: a) Edit your photo(s) using Affinity or another manipulation software to resemble your chosen photographer. The techniques you choose to use when doing this will depend entirely on the photographer you have chosen to research but remember that you can always ask for help. b) Upload and present your edited response underneath your contact sheet c) Reflect on your response(s) using the sentence starters below (you don't have to use all of them, pick and choose the sentence starters which you feel are the most appropriate): For this response I took inspiration from (artist's name) by... I took my photographs.... (where?) My photo shoot was successful /unsuccessful because..... During this shoot I learned that... Something I found tricky whilst taking the photographs/ editing the photographs was... Whilst editing my photos I realised I should have... I wanted to create the illusion/suggestion of distortion by ... Other ways I could manipulate my photographs are... To improve my edited image further I could...
