How could you combine the styles of these two photographers in one image?
Nicholas Goodden
Patric Dreier
What about these two?
Hiroharu Matsumoto
Koen van Damme
Today you are focussing on AO1 and AO2 which is experimenting with links to artists. You will learn how to develop your own ideas by combining the styles of two artists in one edited image.
The key things to remember are: You should take elements of each artists' work and bring them together, for example: - The bright colours of Gooden's work and Dreier's editing technique of removing some parts of the buildings - Matsumoto's use of pattern/repetition and the focus on shadows from Van Damme
Aim to mix it up with each idea, doing something different each time to achieve original and personal results.
Task 1:
Green (grade 1-3) - Copy and paste the following text onto your Year 10 page under the title 'Possible Ideas'. Fill in the gaps with the names of artists you have researched to create a plan for your combined styles shoot.
Idea One: Colours from _______, background from _________ Idea Two: Composition from _________, background from _________ Idea Three: Composition from _________, colours from __________ Idea Four: Concept from _________, colour and contrast from ___________
Amber (grade 4-5) - Copy and paste the following text onto your Year 10 page under the title 'Possible Ideas'. Fill in the first set of brackets with the elements you will combine (e.g. colour, editing techniques, composition, backgrounds, subjects, concepts) and fill in the second bracket with the names of artists you have researched to create a plan for your combined styles shoot.
Idea One: (element) from (artist) combined with (element) from (artist) Idea Two: (element) from (artist) combined with (element) from (artist) Idea Three: (element) from (artist) combined with (element) from (artist) Idea Four: (element) from (artist) combined with (element) from (artist)
Red (grades 6+) - Add a text box onto your Year 10 page under the title 'Possible Ideas'. Write about four combined styles ideas you intend to undertake with details of how each idea combines the work of two or more photographers (which elements of their style will you magpie from the artists you have researched?). Explain why you have chosen each element from each photographer, what about their work did you like and why have you chosen to be inspired by that part of their work. What do you think the overall effect will be on your viewer? What message will you communicate to them in your work?
Task 2: Green (grade 1-3) - Complete one shoot where you take 8 photographs working from your favourite plan.
Amber (grade 4-5) - Take 15-20 photographs, working from your favourite plan.
Red (grades 6+) - Take as many photographs as you wish, try to execute at least two of your plans to a high standard. You may wish to take additional photos at home to develop your idea further. To be successful you will need to: - Vary each idea, try different techniques, colours, compositions etc. - Your photos should build on one another - each time getting better and showing stronger skills
Task 3: Upload your photos onto the computer and add them to your Site as a gallery under the title of 'Idea One'
Task 4: Copy and paste then complete these sentences: - Having explored a range of photographers, I have decided to focus the rest of my project on ______ and ______. - I find these artists inspiring because... (try to be specific here and talk about the techniques/processes your chosen photographers use). - Moving forwards from this point, I plan to combine the styles of these photographers by... - I have been successful in combining their styles in my photographs because... - I will develop my ideas further by... - I will improve my photographs by...
Underneath your paragraph, add two image blocks, and add a photo of each photographer's work (preferably different images to the pictures you have used previously) to make it clear to the examiner who your inspiration will be.
Task 5: Working with your photos, create a series of experiments on Affinity which enhances your photos and combines the styles of both of your chosen photographers. How you choose to edit these photos is up to you, but you might like to revisit our previous editing lessons to get some ideas.
Task 6: Upload the full size images below the title 'Idea One Experiments', then review your work so far:
Green (grade 1-3) To create this experiment, I... I have combined the styles of ______ and ________ by... Something that works well about the edit is... To develop further from here I will...
Amber / Red Try to use cover some (not necessarily all!) of these points in your review, expanding with extra sentences where necessary: - Use of colour - Composition techniques - Lighting - Editing - The meaning behind your photographs - Things you want the viewer's eye to be drawn to in your photo
